In this episode of AGR, hosts Rev. Chris Gordon and Rev. Dr. Dan Borvan tackle the complex topic of the "social gospel," examining its historical roots and its modern-day expression within the MAGA movement. They begin by discussing the intense media exposure to death and tragedy, suggesting our culture is in need of healing. This leads to the central question of how the church should respond to social ills without being distracted from its primary mission (the gospel!). They explore the historical Protestant social gospel, noting that while its intentions to address real issues were good, it often ended up crowding out the true gospel of salvation by grace.

The conversation discusses the "MAGA social gospel" and its recent talk of "open war" against political and cultural opponents. Gordon and Borvan critique the calls for pastors to "ride the news cycle from the pulpit," arguing that the church’s role is to bridge the Word of God to the culture, not the other way around. They highlight the danger of confusing the Law (loving your neighbor and promoting social good) with the Gospel (the proclamation of salvation in Christ). While the Law has a role in restraining evil through civil authorities, the church’s mission is evangelism and preaching the good news. They argue that a focus on "crushing enemies" and a "war-like" mentality misses the true goal of ministry, which is the conversion of hearts through the Gospel.
