Show Notes

In this message from 2 Corinthians 11:16–12:10, Pastor Chris Gordon walks through Paul's reluctant "boasting" as he defends his apostleship against the so-called "super-apostles" who had won over the Corinthian church with outward displays of eloquence, confidence, and spiritual showmanship. Rather than answering them with impressive credentials, Paul points to his sufferings, his vision of the third heaven, and finally to an unnamed "thorn in the flesh" that God refused to remove despite three earnest prayers.

Pastor Gordon unpacks why Paul deliberately left the thorn unspecified, how human strength and divine grace are fundamentally incompatible, and why God's answer — "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" — reframes affliction, disability, and perceived weakness as the very soil in which Christ's power is displayed. Drawing on the Garden of Gethsemane, the book of Job, and reflections from C.S. Lewis, the sermon calls believers to stop measuring authenticity by outward strength and instead to boast in weakness so that the power of Christ may rest on them.
