Psalm 1 presents two men — the perfectly blessed man who never sins and meditates on God's law day and night, and the guilty man destined for judgment — and the key to the psalm is recognizing that the blessed man is not us, but Jesus Christ, the last Adam. By nature we are the guilty man, but through faith and union with Christ, his righteousness is credited to us and we are raised to share in his blessedness. Because we are hidden in Christ, God preserves us from sin's full course, grows in us a love for his Word, and causes us to bear fruit even through trials — all of which drives us toward the praise that fills the whole Psalter.
