Show Notes

In Genesis 27, the covenant family of Abraham is exposed as a deeply dysfunctional mess — Isaac secretly schemes to bless his unbelieving son Esau against God's revealed word, Rebekah manipulates the situation through deception to secure the blessing for Jacob, and Jacob lies three times to his dying father. Every member of the family is acting in their own eyes, driven by sensuality, control, bitterness, and distrust rather than faith in God's promises. The central lesson is that human sin and manipulation cannot frustrate the sovereign will of God — despite the family's failures, God's declared blessing on Jacob was fulfilled exactly as he had ordained before their birth. The true hero of the story is the Lord, whose covenant faithfulness shines through the wreckage, and whose promises point forward to Jesus, the elder brother who became the curse so that deceivers like Jacob could be clothed in his righteousness. The sermon calls us to stop striving to control outcomes and instead trust God's promises, knowing that even our failures cannot alter his will.
