In Genesis 33, Pastor Gordon preaches a preparation sermon before the Lord's Supper, using Jacob's reconciliation with Esau to show that peace with others must be preceded by peace with God. Before facing Esau, Jacob wrestled with God at Peniel and was humbled and renamed Israel, illustrating that our greatest problem is not our human conflicts but our standing before God, and that reconciliation with him reorders all lesser fears. When Jacob came limping to meet his brother, God had already turned Esau's heart, demonstrating his sovereignty over human conflict and calling believers to pursue reconciliation with one another as a fruit of the grace they have freely received in Christ.
