Whom Shall I Fear?

Pastor Chris Gordon preaches through the whole of Psalm 27, a psalm that refuses to fit a single category. It opens with some of the strongest confidence in all of David's writing — "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?" — and then breaks halfway through into a cry of deep lament. That tension, the sermon argues, is exactly the shape of the Christian life. David is not offering ideas he has never tested; John Calvin called this psalm an experimental knowledge of God's grace, meaning David writes out of a lifetime of hardships in which the Lord proved faithful again and again.
