In this sermon on Matthew 5:10–12, Pastor Chris Gordon examines the final and most surprising of the Beatitudes: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake." He begins by naming a temptation common to comfortable, prosperous Western Christians — reducing the faith to a kind of therapy meant to relieve stress rather than call believers into costly discipleship. Drawing on Jesus' teaching in John 15 and Peter's first epistle, he argues that persecution is not something Christians pursue or manufacture through being quarrelsome, political, or merely contrarian; it is what naturally follows from living out genuine righteousness in a world that is hostile to it.
